Do you want to take care of a Shih Tzu? These dogs, like any dogs, require hard work and attention, but there are some breed-specific problems that need particular care.
Steps
- The first issue with shih tzu's is grooming. Every few weeks you will need to bathe the dog, and brush or comb them every day.
- You will also need to trim the dog's hair regularly. Pay special attention to the dogs eye area, because if the eye area gets dirty, it becomes especially prone to eye problems like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Entropy, and Juvenile Cataracts.
- Exercise them as much as possible. They may be small dogs, but they will still need a place to play. This breed loves to play, so buy (or make) some toys, and make sure to go to the dog park as often as you can. Shih Tzu's are sturdy dogs and they don't mind to get a little dirty now and then.
- Give them lots of love! Every dog needs love. If you let them sit in your lap while you read or watch TV, it shows to them that you care.
- Train the dog. Shih Tzu's are notorious for having house breaking problems. They have a 'holier than thou' attitude, that makes it a bit tougher to train them. Be patient, and stay consistent.
- Get them a teething ring. This breed tends to chew a lot in their early years, but with proper training, you can stop the habit.
- Give them healthy dog food. Some shih tzu's have allergies, or stomach sensitivities. If you try a brand of dog food that doesn't seem to agree with your dog, try changing it. If you continue having problems, check with your vet for 'breed specific' brands of food.
- Socialize the animal. Let them meet other dogs. Doing this allows them to become more social and also lets them experience life outside the house. Take them to town now and then so they aren't scared of cars, lights, noises, and other people.
- Once a year, or if you have a problem, go to the vet. As with any pet, your goal should be for your shih tzu to be happy and healthy. The veterinarian is the best person to help you achieve that goal. Shih Tzu's are prone to many health problems, including hip dysplasia, von Willebrand's Disease, and Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. With this breed, frequent vet visits are even more important.
Tips
- If you want, invest in a treat jar. They can be very helpful when training your dog.
- Most Shih Tzu love children, but the temperament of every dog is different.
- Try to brush their teeth.
- If you don't think you can take care of the dog's grooming, take them to a professional groomer.
- Remember that shih tzu's do not have fur. They have hair. This means that they don't shed, making them a great choice for those that don't want too much to clean up.
Warnings
- Be careful when playing with your dog. Dogs naturally play with their mouths; even with humans.
- Remember that dogs think that humans are dogs just like them, and will rough around with you as if you were another dog.
- Dogs don't know that we want our yards and houses in good shape; they may cause a mess.
- Be careful when using scissors around your shih tzu's eyes!
